Large-format 3D printers Thermwood manufactures large 3D printers, from models with a 5-foot-by-5-foot build table to dual-gantry systems with a build table 15 feet wide and lengths available in 20-foot increments up to 60 feet. Its print heads feature a compression wheel to improve layer solidity and a thermal sensor that automatically adjusts layer temperatures to improve layer fusion. The printers create near-net-shape parts, then use CNC routers to trim parts to their final shapes. A vertical layer printing (VLP) option offers additional capabilities beyond the standard horizontal layer printing.
What’s new? Angle layer printing (ALP). With the addition of this capability, users can print at a 45-degree angle.
Benefits Flexibility. Users can now print with standard horizontal layers, or use VLP or ALP, all with a single machine. The company said each orientation has advantages and limitations for part design. A combined VLP/ALP option is available for new machines. The company said that existing machines with the VLP option can be easily updated to add ALP, while the upgrade to add VLP/ALP capabilities is a bit more involved for machines that don’t already have the VLP option.
