Robotic Measuring System Combining an ABB robot with a 3-D white-light scanning sensor, this system can perform quality-control inspections of parts. Moving with precision, the six-axis robot — either an IRB 140 mounted to a wall, floor or ceiling, or a floor-mounted IRB 2400 — can move the sensor to access most areas of both simple and complex parts. At each inspection position, the sensor and camera upload a 300-kilobyte bitmap image to a PC hard drive. As it records the parts, the sensor compares them to digital CAD models.

What's new? The system. First developed for a Tier 1 automotive parts supplier, it's now commercially available.

Benefits Fast, accurate part inspections, and ease of use. The system can capture as many as 25 million points on a part for inspection, allowing it to spot even minute defects. This improves inspection time and eliminates the risk of quality-control errors that can be made in manual inspections. The robot can be easily programmed to inspect different parts.
