ABB announced that construction has begun on an expansion of its existing North American robotics headquarters and manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Mich. The $20 million construction project is supported by a $450,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant and is expected to create 72 jobs by the time work is completed in November.
“Our investment is a significant step in accelerating ABB Robotics’ global leadership in developing and manufacturing cutting-edge robotic solutions in the U.S. for the Americas,” said Sami Atiya, president of ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation. “Our expanded facility will help us to better serve customers in the U.S. and across the Americas, giving them access to innovative automated solutions.”
ABB Robotics became the first global industrial robotics company to commit to a North American production footprint after it moved into the 538,000-square-foot building in 1993 and opened its manufacturing plant in 2015.
ABB has invested $14 billion in the U.S. since 2010, and the latest addition will focus on growth sectors including electric vehicles, health care, packaging and logistics.
