EDNC21 Makino's newest sinker electrical discharge machining (EDM) unit is designed with two gantry-style heads to allow operators to process multiple fine details in a workpiece simultaneously. Each of the heads is capable of traveling up to 79 inches and is independently controlled and programmed using a dedicated Hyper-i control system. Along with the control unit, the EDM comes with Makino's HyperCut technology and new HS-Rib high-speed Z-axis. The X-, Y- and Z-axes have travel lengths of about 79 inches by 59 inches by 24 inches, respectively. The machine, which was released in North America in late December.

Benefits Reduction in processing time and ease of use. According to Makino, the unit can achieve the same level of accuracy and surface finish as sinker EDMs one-tenth the size. The EDNC21 has a programmable rise-and-fall front door for easy access during setup and operation. The door's height can be set to match the height of the workpiece while providing an optimum view of the machining operation.
