3-D scanners Artec 3D's hand-held 3-D scanners measure objects with complex geometries for applications such as quality control, rapid prototyping, reverse-engineering and new product development. The scanners range in price from $9,800 to $39,800. Shown is a 3-D model of a power drill; an Artec Spider scanned the drill without using markers or other tracking assistance.
What's new? Artec Studio 12, the latest version of the company's scanning software for its devices. The new software is faster than previous versions, has an upgraded user interface and incorporates 28 new features, most of which were suggested by customers. The company has significantly improved the algorithms that distinguish between the base on which an object is sitting and the object itself, allowing for automatic removal of the base in the resulting 3-D model, even if the base is not flat. Also, Artec Studio 12 is compatible with SolidWorks 2017 CAD software, allowing users to export 3-D models via the Geomatic for SolidWorks plug-in.
Benefits Shorter post-processing times, smoother data processing and improved views of objects due to enhanced color settings and a new 3-D background on the interface. Also, a new method of data compression dramatically reduces the disk space needed to store a project.
