Form 3 Formlabs’ newest 3-D printer can make prototypes and end-use parts, as well as jigs and fixtures for in-house use. As part of a special process called Low Force Stereolithography, Formlabs’ new proprietary resin tank flexes slightly as parts are lifted out of it. Also, as part of the process, the printer’s Light Processing Unit — including a laser and system of lenses and mirrors — moves below the flexible tank, so that it’s always perpendicular to the area of resin it illuminates.
What’s new? The printer, which will begin shipping this month. Compared with the Form 2, which is already on the market, it is faster and features more integrated sensors, a slightly bigger build volume and more uniform, precise optics. In addition, it has a larger, higher-resolution touch screen.
Benefits Quality printing, easy post-processing and maintenance, and reduced peel forces — the forces required to peel the part away from the resin tank. With its 250-milliwatt laser, the printer delivers smooth surface finishes, even at a resolution of 100 microns. And, it’s been designed for ease of use. For example, users can wash parts directly on the build platform, and they can swap out the printer components with ease, should the need arise. They can even begin print jobs remotely.
