CMG redesigns cutting chamber on Evoluzione granulators

The chamber now includes a new rotor that lets blades cut plastic feedstock in a perpendicular direction against the bed blades.

CMG SpA has redesigned the cutting chamber on its new Evoluzione series of granulators to provide more precise cutting, accommodate higher material volume and ensure easier maintenance. 

The Evoluzione series consists of the EV916 and EV616 models. They were first shown at K2022. 

Changes to the cutting chamber design include a new rotor that lets blades cut plastic feedstock in a perpendicular direction against the bed blades.  

Rotor blades are mounted on the edge of the rotor holding modules instead of on a holding block. This gives quick access from the front of the granulator for blade changes and maintenance. 

The rotor has an open design that takes up only 30 percent of the cutting chamber volume, which means it has a 30/70 volume utilization ratio. CMG said most conventional granulators have a 70/30 volume utilization ratio.   

CMG said the rotation of the rotor reduces the “drag” effect because the mass of material being ground in the cutting chamber does not rotate with the rotor. This reduces the amount of dust and fine particles below the 15 percent common in the industry, the company said. 

The Italian manufacturer said the new design provides a guaranteed bite so the granulators do not need other devices to assist feeding. 

Both Evoluzione granulators utilize a 36-inch-diameter, 63-inch-long, open-type rotor and have a capacity of 6,600 pounds to 11,000 pounds per hour. The series is suitable for wet or dry applications, CMG said.  

Evoluzione granulators are designed for heavy-duty, high-capacity applications. 

Industry 4.0-compatible controls can also be monitored remotely. Operating parameters that can be managed include temperature, blade wear, productivity, operational efficiency and energy use. 

Two motors are available: 75 kilowatts (kW) and 132 kW. 

Both models use CMG’s Adaptive Motor Power (AMP) function that monitors the power needed and adjusts it in real time. AMP reduces the overall amount of electric power used by about 30 percent or more compared with granulators of similar capacity. CMG said the ROI for the AMP feature takes less than 12 months. 

CMG said anti-wear Hardox plates in the cutting chamber are easy to replace.
